Tom Brady (American football)

Brady crafted the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history as the Patriots stormed back to beat the Falcons 34-28 in overtime.
The quarterback was named MVP for his heroic exploits, which not only helped his side reverse a 25-3 deficit but also landed one plucky punter a date with tennis star Eugenie Bouchard

Roger Federer (Tennis)

Thought Federer was past it? Think again. The 36-year-old produced a mesmerising year to capture titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, plus Masters events in Indian Wells, Miami and Shanghai.
Rafael Nadal can feel aggrieved, given he also won two Slams and finished the year as world number one, but a 0-4 record against the Swiss maestro sees him pipped for the nomination.

Lewis Hamilton (Formula 1)

Hamilton drew level with Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost on four world titles after recovering from an indifferent start to dominate in 2017.
The Mercedes man admits he may not have the staying power to challenge Michael Schumacher’s record of seven titles, but he remains the man to beat in 2018.

Anthony Joshua (Boxing)

Joshua effectively retired boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko with a thrilling 11th-round stoppage at Wembley Stadium in April in the most heavily-anticipated heavyweight bout in years.
The IBF and WBA belt holder is now the man to beat in boxing – with opponents queuing up to get a slice of Joshua’s inevitable big pot.

Katie Ledecky (Swimming)

Ledecky keeps smashing through milestones… and she’s still only 20.
The American picked up an astonishing five gold medals at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, making her a 14-time world champion in total – the most in history for a female swimmer.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Football)

A fifth Ballon d’Or saluted the Portuguese star’s efforts for last season, which saw him lead Real Madrid to a Liga-Champions League double last campaign.
Forget his low-key start to the 2017-18 campaign, it’s still been a year to remember for Ronaldo. And now he turns his attention to firing Portugal to World Cup glory…

Mikaela Shiffrin (Alpine Skiing)

Shiffrin finished the season as overall World Cup champion for the first time, receiving the prestigious Skieur d’Or award.
The American, who will defend her slalom title in Pyeongchang in February, also collected a gold and silver at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz.

Anya Shrubsole (Cricket)

Shrubsole claimed five wickets in 19 balls as England stunned India to win the Women’s World Cup.
She claimed the player of the match award and helped raise the profile of women’s cricket in the process.

Annemiek van Vleuten (Cycling)

Not only did the Dutchwoman win the time trial at the UCI Road World Championships and La Course, but she did so barely 12 months after a horrific crash at the Olympics left her with three spinal fractures.
It’s a close call with shock Giro d’Italia winner and world time trial champion Tom Dumoulin, but Van Vleuten gets the nod for a heroic comeback.
