Lindsey Vonn could race against men in 2018

Vonn, 32, has long held the ambition to race in a men’s field and that wish could bear fruit in 2018.

The US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) are set to formally propose Vonn’s entry into the men’s field in a downhill race next year.

The sport’s governing body F.I.S. are expected to consider the proposal at its pre-season meeting in Zurich, which is set to take place on October 3 and 4.

USSA have nominated Lake Louise, where Vonn has claimed 13 victories in the downhill, as the venue, should F.I.S. give the go ahead.

“US Ski and Snowboard Association will put forward a proposal for Lindsey Vonn to participate in the men’s downhill in Lake Louise,” read a statement on the F.I.S. website.

“Further details are still unknown, but this is certainly an anticipated topic that divides the FIS officials,” added the statement.

Vonn has previously said that she believes she would be competitive if she were to race in a men's field.

“I feel like having trained with the men a significant amount over the last few years and being competitive with them almost every single day, I feel like I need that opportunity as an athlete to be able to be able to see what my true potential is,” she said.

Vonn, 32, the 2010 Olympic women’s downhill champion, has won a record 77 World Cup races during her career.
