The American looked to be in contention to set the fastest time when she lost control and took out three layers of safety nets in a big fall.
The incident caused a lengthy delay while the 33-year-old was treated on the slopes, and such was the speed and nature of the crash that many were immediately concerned she could have suffered a serious knee injury. But thankfully the American was able to get back to her feet and gingerly ski to the finish line.
Vonn will have been encouraged by the speed she was showing prior to the crash. She had set the second fastest time in training for the season-opening World Cup downhill and appeared to be backing that up in the race proper.
February's Olympic Games are the ultimate aim for Vonn, who is on the comeback trail after missing much of last season with a broken arm.
