The 21-year-old is on course for her third slalom world title, taking a 0.38 second lead into the second leg later on Saturday morning.
Shiffrin was drawn first, and laid down a marker none of her rivals could match with a storming time of 47.80 seconds.
Switzerland's Wendy Holdener is second and will be roared on by a home crowd, while the Slovakian pair of Veronika Velez Zuzulova and Petra Vlhova lie third and fourth.
Britain's lone competitor Alex Tilley lies 27th after the first leg.
