Martyn Rooney gave a brutal assessment of his failed attempt to reach the 400m finals in Rio, saying he “ran like a dick.”
Great Britain's European champion finished fifth on Friday night and his time in the heat was not enough for him to get a fastest loser’s place.
Immediately after the race, he was asked to describe his frustration and told the BBC: “I ran like a dick, it’s pretty much simple as that. I’m sorry, it’s late ...
“I’ve come to the Olympics to come perform with the best. I feel like I’m in PB shape. I don’t know what I was doing the first 250.”
The interviewer apologised to viewers and Rooney also said: “I’m just gutted for myself and everyone that’s supported me.”
He later took to Twitter to make amends, saying: "Apologies for the language post-race, I need to sort out my head for the relay and deliver for the guys when I'm needed."
