Overall World Cup winner Oskars Melbardis is on course to add World Championship gold to his season's haul as he leads the four-man event in Winterberg at the halfway stage.
Alongside Daumants Dreiskens, Arvis Vilkaste and Janis Strenga, Olympic silver-medallist from Sochi Melbardis is leading the field of 28 sleds with the Latvians coming home in 1:47.53 minutes.
This means they hold an 0.08 seconds advantage over a German sled piloted by defending champion Maximilian Arndt.
And Germany could be on for double medal joy with two-man world champion Francesco Friedrich currently sat third, 0.14 seconds further back.
There is also a German sled sitting fourth with World Championship first-timer Nico Walther bring his crew in 0.16 seconds behind the leaders.
The rest of the field follows a small distance behind, led by the British team of Lamin Deen, Ben Simons, Bruce Tasker and Andrew Matthews, who are 0.38 seconds behind the Latvians in fifth place.
