Brazil's hopes of competing in the women's bobsleigh at the Vancouver Olympics were ended when the Court of Arbitration for Sport turned down their request to replace Ireland in the event.
A three-man CAS panel rejected a claim by the Brazilian Ice Sports Federation that Ireland had been wrongly admitted to compete by the International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Federation.
Earlier this week the International Olympic Committee expanded the women's bobsleigh competition to 21 teams to allow Australia to join as the top-ranked team from Oceania rather than remove Ireland.
Australia had successfully appealed to CAS for the spot based on continental qualification standards that would have forced Ireland to drop out.
However, CAS called for the IOC to expand the competition to 21 teams rather than deny Ireland, the last team to qualify by right, their place.
The women's bobsleigh competition takes place on February 23-24.
