With both teams needing to rebound after opening losses, it was Australia who clinched the all-important victory after Bangladesh had set them a moderate target of 156 - with opener Usmin Khawaja (58 runs off 45 balls) setting the tone and meaning even a few spilt wickets late in the innings could not derail Darren Lehmann's side.
Bangladesh had Mahmudullah to thank as his 49 runs off 29 balls after coming in at No. 6 at least ensured the Tigers set a defendable target. But Khawaja's start eased any lingering Australian nerves and, by the time Mitchell Marsh (six), Glenn Maxwell (26) and John Hastings (three) gave away their wickets late on they still had enough in hand to ease across the line.
Adam Zampa took three wickets for 23 runs to take man-of-the-match honours.
The result means Bangladesh are now almost certainly out of the competition, while Australia remain firmly alive in their bid to reach the next stage.
"We made it difficult for ourselves at the end there," Australia captain Steve Smith said. "We weren't very clinical at the end, I think that's something we have to look at going into the next games."
His opposite number, Mashrafe Mortaza added: "Still we have two matches left, we will play hard and see what happens."
Khawaja was bowled by Al-Amin Hossain in the 14th over having struck seven fours and a six in a 45-ball knock that gave Australia a solid platform, although they had the same sort of middle-order slump they suffered in the first game against New Zealand.
Smith, out for six against the Kiwis, was bowled by Mustafizur Rahman for 14.
Warner was next to fall and was soon followed by Mitchell Marsh.
Maxwell then scored a brisk 26 before being stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim off left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan.
All-rounder Hastings, brought in by Australia for left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, was dropped on nought by Hossain and finally went for three when he was caught at mid-wicket by Soumya Sarkar.
By then Australia needed five runs off the last two overs and James Faulkner and Peter Nevill saw them through to a far-from-convincing win that lifted them to third in the group behind New Zealand and Pakistan but ahead of India.
