England were bowled out for 236 in their second innings, setting India 103 to win the third test at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium on Tuesday.
Parthiv Patel contributed 67 not out from 54 balls with India unbeaten in their past 16 Tests.
Resuming day four on 78-4, England lost three wickets in the morning before being dismissed in the post-lunch session.
Joe Root top-scored for the tourists with a defiant 78, while teenage opener Haseeb Hamid, playing down the order after breaking his finger, remained not out on 59.
Hameed has to fly back to England to have a plate inserted into a hand. He survived 156 balls and 170 minutes to at least offer some resistance.
"To get bowled out for 280 in the first innings, we knew we were behind the eight ball. We had a little bit of a sniff at 200-6, but credit to their lower order," said England captain Alastair Cook:
"It's been a frustrating four days. Credit to India - they outplayed us. We've got a few days off to go our separate ways."
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the home bowlers, claiming 3-81.
England have won only one of their past six matches, but will be given a five-day break after December 1 to recharged the batteries before the fourth Test begins in Mumbai on December 8.
"None of the pitches have been turners, we are just playing very good cricket. Getting them out for 280 was a great boost for us having lost the toss.
"I was surprised by the cheer after the toss because you've still got to play and that motivated us actually."
