Australia, who won the opening test at Pune by 333 runs, were all out for 112 in their second innings as they chased 188 for victory on a difficult surface at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
A superb bowling performance from Nathan Lyon in the first innings (8-50) and Josh Hazlewood in the second (6-67) had put Australia into a terrific position to take a 2-0 lead in the four-match series.
But, when well-placed on 101-4 on the fourth day, Australia lost their last six wickets for just 11 runs in an incredible collapse.
The third test is in Ranchi and starts on March 16.
