In a cagey first half the Scots took a 2-1 lead into the fifth-end break, but after blanking the sixth Germany hit out a Scottish stone in the seventh to score one and level the game at 2-2.
The Germans then stole one in the eighth end for a 3-2 lead and the Scots committed to blanking the ninth end, looking for a winning score in the tenth with last stone.
At the start of this end the Scots put themselves in good shape with a good draw around guards by second player Ross Paterson giving them a strong position. However, a perfectly-judged tap-back saw Germany lying three as Scottish skip Tom Brewster came to play his final stone. He elected to come in off a guard, but this raise attempt failed and Germany stole one for their 4-2 win.
Tuesday's two losses now place Scottish play-off hopes in real jeopardy, a fact not lost on Brewster after the game.
"We're playing well but we just can't seem to get games over the line, I don't know why," said Brewster, with Scotland now needing to beat Italy and Russia on Wednesday and hope other scores go their way.
"We didn't take our chances when we created them. We got a bit unlucky at times. It was just little bits. We had a chance in the tenth and didn't take it.
"We're still alive – two wins tomorrow and we're good. We know we've got a lot of great curling, but we're just missing a couple of shots here and there, that's all it comes down to. Two wins tomorrow and we’ll be in decent shape."
