In the first session of the Championships in St Gallen, Switzerland, Sweden recorded a 10-6 triumph over their opponents, scoring three points in the final end.
It was a winning start for Olympic silver medallists Scotland too, with Team Smith edging out Italy 7-3.
Scotland had taken the lead in the second end before Italy soon levelled, but four points in three successive ends saw Team Smith pull away for the win.
Russia proved little challenge to the Norwegian rink as they flew to an 11-3 victory.
Norway scored four points in both the fifth and seventh ends to put the match out of Russia's reach.
Hosts Switzerland won their opening match 8-3 against the Netherlands as they started their campaign as they wish to go on on home ice.
While in the tie between Germany and Slovakia, the Germans narrowly won 4-2 though little could separate the rinks.
