Smith was looking to maintain their strong start in St Gallen, but his team left themselves too much to do against the Germans after a slow start.
Initially 3-0 down after four ends, the Scots pulled it back to level at 4-4 in the seventh end but Germany replied to win 6-4.
That leaves them in joint third place in the round robin rankings alongside Norway, who beat Slovakia in Monday's fourth session.
Hosts Switzerland and defending champions Sweden are now the two remaining undefeated teams although the latter were pushed all the way to keep their record intact.
It required a final nose-hit in an extra end by skip Niklas Edin for Sweden to eventually see off Russia 10-8 for their fourth win.
By contrast Switzerland enjoyed a six-end 8-2 win over Italy, helped largely by a steal of four points in the fourth end.
Switzerland skip Peter de Cruz said: "We were fortunate that they made so many mistakes, the score did not reflect what it should have been, but we took full advantage.
"We still have a lot of good teams to play so it's not going to be an easy ride. We're only 4-0 and we've more than half the games to go."
Elsewhere, the Netherlands beat Austria 8-3 meaning they and Germany are still challenging strongly for semi-final places. Austria and Slovakia meanwhile are still chasing their first wins.
