Switzerland successfully defend world title

Skip Binia Feltscher and her team – third Irene Schori, second Franziska Kaufmann, lead Christine Urech and alternate Carol Howald – repeated the success they enjoyed in 2014 against a Japanese side contesting their first World Championship final.

The Swiss opened the scoring in the second end before Japan, led by skip Satsuki Fujisawa, blanked the third end and then levelled the score in the fourth.

The lead was to change hands five times during the game, with Japan playing a hit-and-stay to score three points in the eighth end, for 6-5 in Japan's favour.

But Switzerland again scored two more points in the ninth end to re-take the lead at 7-6 and when Fujisawa was heavy with her last stone in the tenth, Switzerland stole two more points for a 9-6 win and the World title.

"We are so excited. It's unbelievable, it's so great. We can't realise it right now [that this is our second title] – maybe tomorrow, we are so excited, it's awesome,” said Feltscher.

"We struggled a bit with the sweeping but we came back later on. They [Japan] played really good, congratulations to them, they deserve it also, it was a great match.

"This is great news for everyone in Switzerland. The whole week was like a dream. A very great ride, and we just enjoyed part of it here."

Earlier in the day, Russia's Anna Sidorova led her team to the bronze medal after beating hosts Canada 9-8 on the very last stone.

"My immediate reaction was to feel so tired,” she said. "It's been a long week and when we finished all the energy drained.

"I feel really emotional about that win because it went down to the last stone. We wanted to fight and it might be Bronze, but for our team it feels like gold."
