Reigning European champions Russia will face a tough challenge if they are to retain their title after losing their opening match to Turkey.
Anna Sidorova's rink were narrowly edged out 7-6 despite taking the lead in the first end, but three points in the seventh end before a point in the final two ends saw Dilsat Yildiz's rink prevail in St Gallen, Switzerland.
It was a difficult start too for Olympic bronze medallists Scotland, as Team Muirhead lost 5-2 at the hands of Sweden.
Nothing could separate the two rinks in the first four ends before Sweden, who lost out in the European final to Russia in 2016, scored three in the fifth to send them on their way to the win.
But it was a perfect start for hosts Switzerland as they ran out 9-4 winners against Denmark.
Silvana Tirinzoni's rink opened the scoring in the first end before their opponents to equalise, but the Swiss never showed any sign of slowing down as they stormed to victory.
Hungary edged out Germany in a 22-point thriller on Sheet D, with Dorottya Palancsa's rink requiring an extra end to seal the win.
Hungary had looked set for success before Germany scored two points in the final end to draw level, requiring a deciding end to settle the score.
And in the only other match of session two, Italy skip Diana Gaspari led her team to a 6-3 triumph over Anna Kubeskova's Czech rink.
