David Zabriskie won the Dauphiné's 43-km time-trial on Wednesday, though Floyd Landis moved within striking distance of Philippe Gilbert's yellow jersey with an impressive second-place. Led by Zabriskie, Americans finished 1-2-3-4 in Stage 3 with Levi Lei
Zabriskie wore the yellow jersey after winning the race's prologue time-trial on Sunday, and is within two minutes and 47 seconds of Gilbert's overall lead, but he was not confident about winning the Dauphiné with a big mountain stage waiting on Saturday.
"I'll do the best I can for the overall classification here but there's a lot of mountains to go," said CSC's time-trial specialist.
"I'll try to do as well as I can, but it's sometimes difficult for me in the mountains."
Landis, on the other hand, has performed brilliantly in the mountains this year, winning Paris-Nice, the Tour of California, and the Tour de Georgia thanks to his climbing skills.
Finishing just 53 seconds behind Zabriskie, the Phonak leader demonstrated that he was prepared to challenge for the yellow jersey in next month's Tour de France, which features two similarly long time-trials.
Landis moved into third-place overalll within three minutes and 48 seconds of Gilbert's lead, and well within striking distance of the overall victory.
