Jaime Roson wins stage six at Tour of Turkey

Roson's Portuguese team-mate José Gonçalves moved into the overall lead as previous leader Pello Bilbao - also of Caja Rural - had fallen ill the night before the stage.

Roson was part of a three-man breakaway alongside Ilia Koshevoy and Jan Hirt with 6km to go, and attacked on his own as the gradient grew steadily steeper.

As the finish line neared Roson was caught by Poland's Przemyslaw Niemiec, but outlasted the Lampre-Merida rider to claim the victory.

“This is absolutely fantastic,” said Roson, who only recently turned professional and was thrilled after his first ever win as a pro.

“I was close to winning the queen stage at the Vuelta Castilla y Leon but Alejandro Valverde brought me back with 400 metres to go.

"I didn’t feel good all day today after I worked a lot for the team during the previous days but I felt much better towards the end.

"Even though Niemiec caught me, I still had enough energy to beat him.”

Niemiec was philosophical after missing out.

"I thought he would be more tired than he effectively was. What a pity”, Niemiec joked. "I accelerated at the right moment. I fought till the end but I couldn’t get the stage win."
