The 30-year-old has elected to miss out on the spring classics, previously a staple part of his racing calendar, deciding to undertake Team Sky stage races and training camps as an alternative.
Previously playing a Tour de France supporting role to Chris Froome, the Welshman is to be one of two Team Sky co-leaders in the Giro – alongside Mikel Landa – with this new programme the first step in Thomas' bid to reach the podium in Italy.
And the double Olympic champion admitted he was glad to have the support of those around him first and foremost, with Sir Dave Brailsford among those favouring the switch as he looks to better his previous best of 15th at Le Tour – achieved in the previous two seasons.
"This first part of the year is completely different to the norm, which is exciting but also a bit scary," he told Cycling Weekly, before going on to discuss his contract negotiations last year.
"I feel like I can speak to Dave. When it came to that point I knew I wanted to stay for numerous reasons. I thought I can do it myself, speak to Dave and thrash it out. I just felt old and wise enough to do it myself, and I was happy with what we came to.
"If I was top ten in the Giro it would be the best result I've had in a Grand Tour, which would be a step forward. But you want to go in and get the best result you can.
"It's hard to put a result because there are so many other things that can affect it, but I think if I have the best preparation into the Giro and give it everything then that's a success."
