Mark Cavendish has been forced to withdraw from the Road World Championships due to a shoulder injury he suffered at the Tour of Britain.
Cavendish has pulled out of the Great Britain squad for the road race on Sunday, September 27 after failing to shake off the injury he suffered after crashing during the Tour of Britain. The World Championships begin in Richmond, Virginia this weekend.
The 2011 world champion had said he was doubtful after sustaining the injury by crashing into a car during stage six of the Tour of Britain.
X-rays had confirmed there were no fractures sustained of the shoulder joint, but the rider had struggled during training after damaging the same shoulder during the 2014 Tour de France.
Cavendish's withdrawal comes after Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas withdrew as Great Britain's medal hopes suffered another blow.
