2017 UCI Road World Championships: Everything you need to know

The World Championship get underway with the Women’s Team Time Trial on Sunday September 17 and run for a week, concluding with the Men’s Road Race on Sunday September 24.

The 2017 event will be held in Bergen on the west coast of Norway. The picturesque city is surrounded by fjords and mountains, providing both technically challenging terrain and a spectacular backdrop.

It’s the biggest one-day road race in the calendar and Peter Sagan is eyeing his third straight world title. The 276km route will feature a picturesque 40km roll into the host city before 12 loops around an undulating Bergen circuit.

The women will compete on a 152.8km course that features eight laps of the same circuit used by the men, but drops the opening 40km section.

The Juniors, Women and Men all compete on similar routes around Bergen, but it is the Men’s Elite race that will attract the most attention. The star-studded field will face a relatively short course of just 31km, but the addition of a fierce climb up Mount Floyen will bring plenty of riders into play for the overall title.

Peter Sagan is the man to beat, with the immensely talented Slovakian perfectly suited to the Bergen course as he bids for a third title in three years.

However, a lot of potential world champions sat out the energy-sapping Vuelta with an eye on victory in Norway.

Greg van Avermaet dominated the one-day classics at the start of the year, peaking at Paris-Roubaix, but can he recreate that form months later? Michal Kwiatkowski was the driving force behind Team Sky’s efforts to get Chris Froome to the top of the Tour de France podium, and the talented Polish cyclist has the sprinting ability to put himself in the mix if it comes down to a bunch finish. And while Tom Dumoulin will be primarily targeting the time trial, a double can’t be discounted, especially if the big Dutchman can get into a successful breakaway.

Amalie Dideriksen burst onto the world stage with victory last year, but Coryn Rivera has been the rider to beat in the one-day bursts this year, while Lizzie Deignan will be hoping that a bout of appendicitis at the end of August hasn’t damaged her preparation too much.

Chris Froome will travel to Bergen aiming to add a rainbow jersey to his collection of yellow and red (and white and green) jerseys from the summer so far.

The British rider hasn’t fared well in previous World Championships, but the testing climb at the end of this year’s route should be to his liking. It remains to be seen whether Froome has enough in his legs after his Tour-Vuelta double to compete with his fresher rivals.

Time Triallers such as Tony Martin will hope to be in contention, but the Mount Floyen ascent leans the racing in favour of an all-rounder, with Dumoulin the big favourite after his sensational time trial efforts on the way to winning this year’s Giro d’Italia.
