Burghley, a ‘three-day’ event which actually runs over four days on the parklands of Burghley House, near Stamford in Lincolnshire, begins with Dressage on Thursday and Friday, then Cross-Country on Saturday and Jumping on Sunday. Burghley is part of the worldwide FEI Classics series, which brings together the top eventing competitions across the globe — also currently including the Badminton Horse Trials in Great Britain, the Kentucky Three Day, the Australian International Three Day Event, Germany’s Luhmühlen Horse Trials and the Étoiles de Pau in France. It is also part of the Grand Slam of Eventing (an Olympic sport which challenges the versatility of horses and riders through the three different horsemanship disciplines).
This year, there will be a new winner at the world-class Horse Trials as last year’s champ, Australian Chris Burton and his mount Nobilis 18, have had to withdraw. A strong line-up of the world’s other top eventers will be there, however, including World No.1 Michael Jung, Nicola Wilson, Gemma Tattersall, Oliver Townend, Nicola Wilson, Piggy French, Andrew Nicholson, Mark Todd, Boyd Martin and Hannah S. Burnett. For a full list of the elite riders and their various mounts at Burghley, see here.
The historic event at Burghley comes on the heels of the 2017 FEI European Eventing Championships in Strzegom, Poland, where Great Britain won Team gold and Wilson captured the bronze medal with Bulana.
