17th time lucky? McLain Ward is a double Olympic Gold Medallist in Show Jumping, but has not yet won his sport's coveted World Cup Final after 16th previous attempts. This year, with his incredible horse HH Azur, the American rider appears closer than ever to that goal after two opening victories at the Longines FEI World Cup in Omaha, Nebraska, ahead of tomorrow's big Final in the Midwest state.
Friday evening, Ward and his 11-year-old Belgian-born mount beat 32 other horse-and-rider combinations, including Gregory Wathelet of Belgium on Forlap (2nd), and Romain Duguet of Switzerland with Twentytwo Des Biches (3rd). Ireland’s Denis Lynch on All Star finished 10th. Afterwards, Ward spoke about HH Azur: “She’s an independent woman, I don’t think she needs me very much! I have to try to keep a handle on her, but she tries to give you everything she has, and she has a tremendous amount to give!”
