It was the car used to claim 23 FIA European Rally Championship event wins and three drivers’ titles. Now almost 10 years on from its ERC debut, Carlos Fernandes will be competing in a ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000 on the upcoming Azores Airlines Rallye.
Fernandes, winner of Portugal’s second-tier FPAK title in 2016, is switching from his regular Mitsubishi Lancer to one of the previous-generation Czech machines.
"It will be a first-time event for me, the first time with an S2000, the first time in the Azores, the first race in this championship, it will be all new and as such we set the goal to reach the end of the rally,” said Fernandes. “We will try to make a quick adaptation but not to commit crazy, because we are the only team with an S2000, which is naturally less evolved than the various R5s that will be present. But I feel that this is an opportunity we have to grab with all the strength, showing our sponsors in a rally with a great television coverage and in the media in general.”
Valter Cardoso will co-drive Fernandes on the ERC-opening Azores Airlines Rallye from 30 March-1 April.
