After claiming a national title last weekend, young Portuguese driver Diogo Gago is hoping for a chance for more international success like the maiden FIA ERC Junior Championship win he scored earlier this year.

Gago claimed the Portuguese two-wheel-drive title with a fifth class win from six starts on Rallye do Algarve, enabling him to beat Gil Antunes (who also contested two ERC events this year).

Having previously competed in ERC Junior with the Peugeot Rally Academy in 2015, Gago made a return in a 208 R2 on June’s Azores Airlines Rallye and won the category after a battle with title contenders Marijan Griebel and Chris Ingram.

“This season we have worked hard to confirm our presence rally-by-rally, but for anyone who wants to win titles, this is not the ideal scenario,” said Gago. “After becoming national rally champions and the first Portuguese to win an ERC Junior round, I think we've done enough to deserve support that allows us to have a more ambitious programme. Let's hope this support finally comes, because we want more wins and titles next season, but at this moment there is no sign that we can continue to compete.”
