The ERC Junior battle is already red-hot early on the opening round of the 2016 season, with Marijan Griebel taking over at the head of the order on stage two of the Circuit of Ireland as the top five are covered by a mere eight seconds.

Griebel was quickest among the young FIA European Rally Championship contingent on Knockboy 1 to take over the category lead from Łukasz Pieniążek. Griebel is 2.4 seconds ahead of his ADAC Opel Rallye Junior team-mate Julius Tannert, with Chris Ingram 2.2s further back in the third of the factory-supported Adam R2s.

Pieniążek has slipped to fourth after his outstanding start, but the Pole is still within 6.2s of the category lead. On his first ERC appearance since his stunning debut in Valais last year, Peugeot 208 R2 driver Nikolay Gryazin is clinging onto the Opel quartet, only 1.8s behind Pieniążek.

It was Steve Røkland who set the ERC Junior pace in yesterday’s Qualifying Stage but he’s had a much harder start to the rally for real, suffering a clutch issue that forced him to reverse in order to get around a hairpin on SS2. He’s sixth, but half a minute down.
