The FIA ERC Junior Under 27 has attracted another new recruit from national-level competition for its inaugural season in 2017.
Czech Karel Kupec, 24, will drive a Peugeot 208 R2 in the young driver category alongside compatriot Ondrej Krajca and will be in contention for the top prize of 100,000 euros, which goes to the eventual champion for use in the ERC Junior U28 Championship in 2018.

Kupec tackled two ERC events in 2016, in his homeland and in Latvia, and enjoyed the experience so much that he was keen to undertake a full-season campaign in the category designed to provide the first competitive step on the international rallying ladder.

“It was very good experience for us to start abroad,” said Kupec. “In Czech Republic, we have nice special stages but they have similar character. On the other hand, in the European Rally Championship there is a lot of events with different surfaces. Also ERC Junior U27 is good platform for us, so we have decided to compete in this championship.”

Karel Kupec, who will begin his ERC Junior campaign on the Azores Airlines Rallye, is the older brother of fellow Czech driver Radomír Kupec. Starting in autocross, Kupec switched to rallying following a successful 10-year stint. Initially contesting lower-level events, Kupec stepped up to larger national events and immediately demonstrated his pace, regularly battling for class victories.
