The long-standing Colin McRae ERC Flat Out Trophy has set a brand new record on Rally Liepāja: for the first time in its history it has been awarded to not one but two drivers, and also for the first time in its history it has gone to the two youngest drivers to have competed on an ERC event.
The two award winners were Mārtiņš Sesks, who showed stage-winning pace in Latvia after graduating from the ERC Junior Experience, and Kalle Rovanperä: who matched the times of overall winner Ralfs Sirmacis. Sesks celebrated his 17thbirthday on Sunday, whereas Rovanperä – who currently leads the Latvian championship – is not yet even 16.
Jim McRae – one of the members of the selection panel for the award, which also includes ERC sporting manager Jean-Pierre Nicolas and head of production Gilbert Roy – said: “Colin was the youngest world champion in the history of the sport, so it's brilliant to see young talent being rewarded like this on the ERC. Martin and Kalle have done a great job; I wish them all the best for the future.”
Rovanperä and Sesks are pictured with their trophies alongside their proud fathers: WRC event-winner Harri Rovanperä and the mayor of Liepāja Uldis Sesks.
