José Suárez’s FIA European Rally Championship is alive after the Peugeot Rally Academy driver landed his first podium in the series.
The Spaniard’s campaign had been blighted by back luck with a crash and mechanical failure wrecking his hopes of a strong start to the season in the Peugeot 208 T16 he shares with co-driver Cándido Carrera.

But all that changed when he bagged third in class on his Rally Rzeszow debut on Saturday, while underlining his pace with an outright stage win against more experienced opposition.

“I’m feeling really good,” said Suárez. “We needed to score points after a hard start to the season so we were being calm and focused, more like we were fishing, to keep the confidence. I am quite happy with what we have done and with our performance over the weekend because we had a best time overall.

“We had a problem with the gearbox [on Friday] and had to use second gear to take the junctions and sometimes we had to use reverse. It was hard not to lose time but the team changed it amazing fast in service and I am proud of them. I am pleased we could make a good job for the team and get some good points for the championship.”
