The African Games, also called the All-Africa Games or the Pan African Games, are a continental multi-sport competition held every four years. This edition of the Games marks the 50th anniversary, as well as their return to Brazzaville which hosted the first edition in 1965.
In the men’s individual sabre event, Tunisia’s Fares Ferjani took the gold medal by deafeating compatriot Hichem Samandi taking sliver. The Egyptian duo of Ahmed Ehab and Ziad Elsissy both took bronze medals as beaten semi-finalists.
There was better news for Egypt with gold, silver and a bronze in the women’s individual sabre as Mennatall Ahmed took gold over her team-mate Mariam El Sway. Their compatriot Nour Montaser shared third and took a bronze alongside Senegal’s Ndeye Fatou Thiam.
In the team sabre events, Egypt took out both the men’s and women’s competitions. In the men’s section they edged out Tunisia as runners-up and Senegal in third, whilst in the women’s competition, Algeria came runners-up to take silver with Senegal again taking third and bronze.
There was an Egyptian one-two in the men’s individual epee competition as Ahmed Elsaghir took gold beating team-mate Ayman Fayez in the final. Another Egyptian, Mohannad Saif claimed a bronze as one of the losing semi-finalists alongside Senegal’s Babacar Adam.
Tunisia’s Sarra Besbes slightly halted the trend of Egyptian success by winning the gold women’s individual epee. She overcame Egypt’s Ayah Mahdy with the latter’s fellow Egyptian duo of Nourhan Desouky and Nardin Ehab claiming bronze medals.
Somewhat predictably, the men’s team epee event went to Egypt, with Senegal claiming second and silver and Mali third place and bronze. However in the women’s team epee event, South Africa emerged champions with Egypt having to settle for runners-up and silver, ahead of Tunisia in third place.
In the men’s individual foil competition, Egypt took gold and bronze as Alaaekdub Abouelkassem beat Algeria’s Roman Djitli in the final, as Mohamed Essam took bronze along with Tunisia’s Ayoub Mohamed Ferjani.
It was a Tunisia gold and silver in the women’s individual foil as Ines Boubakri edged out Haifa Jabri, with Egypt’s Hadil Elsharkawy and Algeria’s Anissa Khelfaoui taking third place bronze medals
It was the same three nations involved in the standings of the team foil events. The men's team foil competition went to Egypt with Tunisia and Algeria, whilst in the women’s competition both Tunisia and Algeria both went one better; Tunisia taking gold, Algeria the silver leaving Egypt to settle for bronze.
