Imboden and Errigo win FIE World Cup foil competitions in Paris and Gdansk

The FIE World Cup calendar resumed after the festive break with the foil competitions which saw USA star Race Imboden win his second successive men’s Challenge International de Paris and Italy’s Arianna Errigo claim gold in Poland.

The French Fencing Federation welcomed representatives from 45 countries to the French capital to participate in the latest round of the Fencing World Cup.
With World Cup and Grand Prix events having precious ranking points up for grabs to earn qualification for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games , the stakes have been raised higher for the second half of the 2015-16 season.
The Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris was the venue as 218 of the top men’s foil fencers in the world including the World and Olympic Champions, competed in both individual and team events at the prestigious event looking to improve their qualification prospects for Rio.
22-year-old Imboden, a top medal hope for the USA in Rio, world No. 4 Race Imboden retained his gold medal from last year by defeating Germany’s Peter Joppich, ranked 16, by a score of 15-9 in an exciting final.
Third place along with two bronze medals went to world championship bronze medallist Gerek Meinhardt of the United States and Russia’s Dmitry Rigin.
Imboden then inspired the Americans to a pulsating 45-43 victory over fierce rivals Italy in the team event.
The bronze went to Great Britain, who beat South Korea 35-34.
In the Polish city of Gdansk, the Polish Fencing Federation welcomed 167 foil fencers from 35 countries for the women’s foil, individual and team events,
Held at the Gdańsk School of foil, competitors were also battling for qualification to the Rio Olympic Games and it was the world No. 3 Errigo who fought off a strong Russian challenge to claim her second World Cup win this season.
The Italian beat Aida Shanaeva 15-8 in the final to emerge victorious from a field representing 35 nations and six continents.
The bronze medals went to world champion Inna Deriglazova of Russia and Martina Batini of Italy.
In the women’s team event, Italy took gold by defeating Russia 45-44 in a closely-fought final match, with Germany taking bronze.
