World's best fencers continue Rio 2016 Olympic qualification bids

The road to the 2016 Olympics Games for the world’s top fencers continued with World Cup events in the sabre and foil disciplines in France, Romania and Japan.

The men’s sabre event was held in Budapest, Romania and saw Russia’s Alexey Yakimenko win gold once again.
He came up against Korea’s Kim Jung Hawan in the gold medal final and after a tight contest Yakimenko took the match with a 15-14 scoreline. The bronze medal went to Russia’s Kamil Ibragimov and France’s Nicolas Rousset.
Russia also came on top in the team event. In an equally close encounter, they beat USA 45-44, with the bronze medal going to Hungary after they beat Germany 45-42.
The women’s sabre events, held in Orleans, France, saw Russia’s Yana Egorian emulate the victory in the men’s event by Yakimenko by securing the individual event.
She edged out her Ukrainian rival Olga Kharlan by 15 touches to 8, with bronze medal third place taken by Korea’s Jisu Yoon and Ibtihaj Muhammad of USA.
In the women’s team event, Ukraine got their revenge by beating Russia 45 to 33 in the final, with France beat Italy in the bronze medal match.
In the foil discipline, the men’s competitions took place in Tokyo, Japan, with the women’s action based in Saint Maur, France.
The Komazawa Olympic Park Gymnasium in Tokyo was the venue for the Fencing World Cup in the men’s foil individual and teams events, with some 178 foil fencers from 33 countries competing.
USA’s Alexander Massialas took victory in men’s individual event after beating Korea’s Jun Heo 15-10 in the gold medal final.
In doing so, Massialas, who took silver earlier this year at the World Fencing Championships in Moscow, Russia, became the top-ranked foil fencer.
The 2015 World Champion from those Championships, Japan’s Yuki Ota and USA’s Meinhardt Gerek took the bronze medals.
There was also success for the USA in the team foil event, as they beat France 45-33 to claim the gold medal. China took bronze by beating Great Britain by the same scoreline.
The Sport Center Pierre Brossolette in the city of Saint-Maur, France, welcomed 178 of the top women’s foil fencers from 38 countries for the women’s foil events.
Italy’s Arianna Errigo edged out compatriot and top ranked fencer, Elisa Di Francisca 12-11 to clinch the women’s individual event. The two bronze medals went to USA’s Lee Kiefer and Germany’s Carolin Golubytskyi.
The Italians made it a women’s foil double as they also took out the team event. They beat Russia 45-25 in the final, with France taking the bronze medal after beating Korea 45-24.
