Yuzuru Hanyu clinches NHK Trophy gold

Skating on home ice, Hanyu scored 197.58 in the free skate to achieve a combined total of 301.47, having recorded 103.89 in the short program on Friday.

With fellow countryman Keiji Tanaka taking the bronze medal, it was American Nathan Chen who stood between them in the standings to win silver, scoring a total of 268.91.

Tanaka scored 248.44 across the two events, ensuring both he and Chen maintained their positions from overnight to complete the podium line-up and win their first senior Grand Prix medals.

For Hanyu, the result saw him post a new season's best to win his first Grand Prix medal of the season and ensure his qualification for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, with Chen also making the cut.

"I am actually very relieved that I advanced to the Grand Prix Final and also I was able to land the quad loop for the first time in an official (major competition) program," the 2014 World Champion said.

"I was certainly feeling anxious coming in, but at the same time I was mentally prepared, because I was confident that I had practiced very hard. Additionally, this is my home turf and I was able to get a lot of support."

In the women's event, it was Russia's Anna Pogorilaya who took home the gold medal, with Satoko Miyahara of Japan and fellow Russian Maria Sotskova taking silver and bronze respectively.

World bronze medallist Pogorilaya scored 139.30 points for her free skate, finishing with a total of 210.86, to win her second Grand Prix gold medal of the season.

Having finished in third place following Friday's short program, Miyahara picked up 133.80 points on Saturday to move up into silver medal position with an overall total of 198.00, while Sotskova picked up bronze with 195.88 – all three medallists qualified for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final.

Canada's Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford skated to pairs gold, their third of the season, with Chinese pairings completing the podium line-up.

The two-time World champions earned 131.61 points in the free skate to move up to gold medal position, finishing the event with a total of 204.56 points.

Cheng Peng and Yang Jin won silver with 196.87 having slipped into second from top spot, while Xuehan Wang and Lei Wang placed third.

In the short dance, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada danced their way into the lead, setting a new record score of 79.47 points.

Below the 2010 Olympic champions in the standings are France's Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron in second, with 75.60 points, and Italy's Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte in third on 72.00, a new season's best.

The ice dance competition will conclude on Sunday, following the completion of the free dance.
