Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set Borussia Dortmund on their way to a 2-1 win in Lisbon against Champions League rivals Sporting at Estadio Jose Alvalade to keep them top of Group F.

Aubameyang gave his side an early lead and Julian Weigl scored a brilliant individual goal late in the first half to put the Germans in control before Sporting substitute Bruno Cesar set up a thrilling finale.

Dortmund, held 2-2 at home by Real Madrid in their opening Champions League match before thrashing Legia Warsaw 6-0 in Poland, stay top of the group on goal difference ahead of the Spanish champions.

The visitors made the perfect start, taking a ninth-minute lead through Aubameyang's ninth goal in 11 appearances this season.

The Gabon international finished clinically into the bottom corner from inside the area following Mario Gotze's pass.

Sporting's Dutch striker Bas Dost headed his side's first chance wide following Gelson Martins' cross in the 29th minute and on-loan Sunderland defender Sebastian Coates forced Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki into a fine save as the home side searched for an equaliser.

But Aubameyang twice went close to adding his second 10 minutes before the break when heading Felix Passlack's cross wide and then forcing Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio into a brilliant low reflex save.

A moment of individual brilliance from Weigl secured Dortmund their second two minutes before half-time.

The defensive midfielder beat Elias on the edge of the area and curled a measured finish beyond the covering defenders and inside Patricio's far post.

Sporting striker Martins was denied by Burki early in the second half but the home side reduced the arrears in the 67th minute when Bruno Cesar lashed home a free-kick from inside the area, awarded for a pass back to the goalkeeper moments earlier.

Dost headed just off target but Sporting were nearly caught out again as they searched for the equaliser when Dortmund midfielder Christian Pulisic rattled the crossbar with a shot from outside the area following a free-kick.

Martins' angled drive flew narrowly wide for Sporting in the closing stages and Ezequiel Schelotto's header was well saved by Burki as the Germans held on.
