The 31-year-old took home the prize as voted for by 173 journalists across the world, and his fourth trophy means he is now just one behind Messi who has five.
Following the ceremony on Monday the full results have now been published which give an in-depth breakdown of how the voting panned out.
Each journalist was given three votes, with five points given to their top vote, three to their second, and one to their third.
Here are the main headlines from the voting results.

Ronaldo doubles Messi

In total Ronaldo received a massive 745 points, which was more than double the 316 awarded to Barcelona forward Messi.

Ronaldo helped Real Madrid to win the Champions League and captained Portugal to the 2016 European Championships, their first major international tournament.

Ronaldo's former clubs pay tribute

Ronaldo's two former clubs, Sporting CP and Manchester United both quickly paid tribute to their former star for his success.

La Liga dominance

In a growing trend the top six players in the world according to these voting results all ply their trade in La Liga. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale represent Real Madrid whilst Barcelona's front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar are all present, along with Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann.

11 players received no votes

France Football, the publication who run the awards, had a short-list of 30 players but 11 of these players received no votes.
These were: Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Paulo Dybala, Sergio Ramos, Manuel Neuer, Hugo Lloris, Koke, Thomas Muller, Diego Godin, Gonzalo Higuain and Andres Iniesta.

Vardy gets the nod from Vanuatu

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy finished eighth on the overall voting list but just one country voted for him as the overall winner, that was the tiny South Pacific island of Vanuatu.

Lewandowski - "The Cabaret"

Polish forward Robert Lewandowski placed 16th overall in the list and he evidently wasn't too happy with the results.
However it transpires that the only place where Lewandowski picked up a vote (he received just three points) was in Mongolia.
