Photos of German fans holding up banners reading ‘Refugees Welcome’ went viral last weekend as football fans extended a show of friendship to those hundreds of thousands entering Europe from places like Syria.
Borussia Dortmund invited a group of 220 refugees to a Europa League qualifier against Odds BK while Mainz and Hannover were amongst a collection of other clubs to offer tickets to games and shirts.
Now Bayern, Germany’s richest club by some distance, have announced an initiative to try and aid migrant integration in the company, as well as giving young refugees the chance to train at the club.
In a club statement, Bayern outlined how they plan to invest €1 million (£730,000) into refugee projects as well as holding a training camp for young migrant children.
Refugees will be given German classes and given food and football equipment.
In addition, Bayern say that in their next home match, which comes against Augsburg on September 12, players will emerge from the tunnel with a German child in one hand and a refugee in the other.
President: Karl Heinz Rummenigge said: "Bayern has a social responsibility to help the refugees, needy children, women and men, to help them and to assist them in Germany."
