In a statement on the Bundesliga club's website, Dortmund confirmed that Dembele has signed a contract with the club until 2021.
Dembele, who has played for the French national team at under-18 and U19 level, has scored 12 times in 25 appearances for seventh-placed Stade Rennes and is the club's top-scorer this season and was recently voted LIgue 1's Young Player of the Year.
Dotmund's Sporting Director Michael Zorc said of the signing: "Ousmane can play nearly every position in attack. He is strong one-on-one, he can play with both feet, he is good at nutmegging and dribbling, and he is fast and dangerous in front of goal."
Speaking to the club's official website, Dembele said: "I am totally convinced of the Borussia sporting concept," adding "I can hardly wait to play in the Bundesliga."
Confirmation of the move ends speculation around a potential move to Premier League champions, Leicester CIty, for the Frenchman once and for all, after it was reported that Claudio Ranieri had spoken to the youngster about a possible move, only to be rebuffed.
"I was surprised to hear from him but I told him I will not be going to Leicester," Dembele told Ouest-France.
