Hamburger SV produced a spirited performance to deservedly beat a strangely under par Dortmund side, winning 3-1 in the Volksparkstadion.
The match was delayed by 15 minutes as heightened security caused traffic congestion outside the stadium. But when play did get underway it was one-way traffic in favour of the home side, with Pierre-Michel Lasogga’s 19th minute penalty putting Hamburg ahead after Ivo Ilicevic was brought down by Roman Burki.
The excellent Lewis Holtby put Hamburg further ahead before the break and when Mats Hummels headed into his own net early in the second half, victory looked secure.
But Dortmund rallied well, with only a string of fine saves from Rene Adler keeping them goalless until Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang caused a few late jitters by scoring his 15th of the season.
The result means that Hamburg jump to eighth in the table, level with Cologne on goal difference. Dortmund remain second, five points behind Bayern Munich.

KEY MOMENTS

19’ – GOAL! Hamburg 1-0 Dortmund: Ilicevic latches onto a lovely through ball from Holtby and is taken down by Adler as he tries to go around the keeper. Lasogga slots home the resultant penalty.
41’ – GOAL! Hamburg 2-0 Dortmund: A loose pass from Ginter is pounced upon. Muller feeds Holtby on the right and the former Spurs man sweeps the ball home past Burki.
55’ – GOAL! Hamburg 3-0 Dortmund: A disaster for mats Hummels, who heads Lewis Holtby’s corner straight into his own net.
62’ – GREAT SAVE ADLER! Aubameyang is played in by Piszczek but a great save from Adler denies him with a great save. Should have scored, really.
76’ – GUNDOGAN DENIED: Another great save from Adler, pushing his free kick wide after scrambling across goal at full stretch.
86’ – GOAL! Hamburg 3-1 Dortmund: Made by sub Januzaj and finished well by Aubameyang for his 15th of the season. Too little, too late though.
90’ – ADLER TO THE RESCUE AGAIN: Another great stop denies Castro on the volley.

KEY STATS

Hamburg halt a run of seven successive Dortmund wins in all competition.
Exactly 5 years after his 1st own goal in the Bundesliga (2-1 in Freiburg on 20/11/2010), Mats Hummels scored his 2nd one. Misfortune.
Hamburg have now lost just one of their last seven BL meetings with Dortmund (W4, D1) – a 6-2 loss away from home in September 2013. They have also suffered just one defeat on home soil in their last nine games against BVB (W6, D2) – they lost 5-1 in the second half of the 2011/12 season.
BVB lose their first of 20 Friday fixtures (W17, D2), winning each of their last 10 before tonmight. Their last defeat dates back to February 2010, when they were beaten 2-1 by Schalke.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the league’s top scorer with 15 goals to his name.

TALKING POINT

Where was the usual Dortmund? This looked an absolute banker before kick-off, but the visitors looked lethargic and subdued. For whatever reason, it could cost them dear.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Rene Adler (Hamburg) Had the keeper not pulled off a string of fine saves, Hamburg could be celebrating a high-scoring draw at the least.
