Sutton feels Celtic deserved real credit in bouncing back from a 5-0 Champions League opening defeat against Paris St Germain by beating Anderlecht 3-0.
But the BT Sport pundit feels Wednesday's clash in Germany could be a long night if they do not show the same mentality for a second game running.
"They didn't get enough praise for the response against Anderlecht," the former Celtic striker said. "Everyone was talking about how bad Anderlecht were and that was unfair on Celtic.
"They showed real authority and belief after a 5-0 walloping at home. This is a step up. If they have a chance it is a case of going out, thinking they've got nothing to lose and being brave.
"Against PSG they folded and it isn't going to be any easier in Munich. This is a top team who harbour hopes of winning the Champions League."
For the second European game running, Celtic face a team who recently changed their manager. But Jupp Heynckes led Bayern to a 5-0 victory over Freiburg in the first game of his second spell in charge and the Bavarian club sit second in the Bundesliga.
Sutton said: "I don't fall for the Bayern instability thing, that's rubbish. If they are in crisis, god help everyone else.
"It was a player revolt that got (Carlo) Ancelotti out.
"They have had a blip, but they have won eight out of 12 and scored 30-odd goals, they won the German Super Cup. They lost to PSG, but we saw PSG do that to Barcelona last season. That got Ancelotti out and they now have someone who knows the club inside out.
"So Celtic have it all to do, but they can take confidence from the way they responded at Anderlecht. That was hugely impressive. And they need to be brave again. That's key.
"They played a super club in PSG and lacked bravery on the ball. Bayern will come out and press Celtic high up the pitch, so Celtic need players who are prepared to take the ball."
