Antoine Griezmann struck in each half to give Atletico Madrid a 2-0 win over Barcelona at the Vicente Calderon and a glorious 3-2 aggregate success over their Spanish rivals in a frantic Champions League quarter-final second leg.
Griezmann made the difference with a header on 36 minutes and a late penalty on 88 minutes, but Barca will rue the decision by the Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli to award a free-kick instead of a penalty when Gabi clearly handled a Andres Iniesta shot inside his box in time added on with the visitors chasing a goal to force to the tie to extra-time.
Barca were instead awarded a free-kick which Lionel Messi lifted over the bar as Luis Enrique's side's hopes of becoming the first club to win back-to-back Champions League trophies crashed and burned at the same venue where they lost in the last eight of the 2014 tournament.

In saying that, Atletico - who only enjoyed 28 per cent of possession in sealing their place in Friday's semi-final draw - will argue that Iniesta should not have been on the park after Rizzoli decided to only book the Spain midfielder after he denied a clear goal-scoring chance with a deliberate handball from a Filipe Luis pass that led to the Atletico penalty award.
Barca are on their worst run of form since Enrique took charge in August 2014, losing their last two games to Real Madrid and Real Sociedad, drawing with Villarreal and adding this defeat to Atletico, who they had overcome 2-1 at the Camp Nou in the first leg last week.
Barca's lead at the top of La Liga over second-placed Atletico has been cut to three points, with Real a point further back, and they must regroup to ensure they do not blow the domestic league title in Spain a year after carrying off the treble.

TALKING POINT

Can Barcelona feel hard done by? Very much so. It was an obvious decision to award the visiting side a penalty with Gabi realising immediately that he had illegally blocked the Iniesta shot. Somehow the referee Nicola Rizzoli and his linesmen saw it differently, despite some fierce Barcelona protests, and awarded a free-kick.
Overall, Barca were poor in the final third despite dominating possession, and you can only admire the organisation and spirit Diego Simeone extracts from his side on such nights. Atletico might go one step further than 2014 when they were denied late on in the final against Real Madrid in Lisbon. They are a team nobody will fancy facing having outthought and outfought Barca.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Diego Godin (Atletico) - What can you say? A masterclass in defending in showing how you help to keep men like Messi, Neymar and Suarez quiet. A quite magnificent central defender, who symbolises all that is good about Diego Simeone's side. He took a bad hit in a challenge with Uruguay team-mate Suarez, who connected with his elbow, but just got up and got on with it after some treatment. A real leader.

KEY MOMENTS

36' - GOAL! Griezmann plants a header beyond Ter Stegen from the penalty box. Lovely cross by Saúl Ñíguez. No chance for the visiting keeper as he dived to his left. Game on now. Atletico with a 1-0 lead.
54' - SO UNLUCKY! Saúl Ñíguez sees the ball come back off the bar from a looping header with Ter Stegen beaten. So unfortunate.

87 - PENALTY TO ATLETICO! Deliberate handball by Iniesta from the Luis attempted pass. Clear handball. But no red card for Iniesta.
88 - GOAL! Griezmann slots the ball to his right. Ter Stegen should have saved diving to his left, but can't keep it out. A 2-0 lead for Atletico on the night.
90+1' - CONTROVERSY! Clear handball by Gabi inside the box from the Iniesta shot, but the referee instead awards a free-kick on the edge of the box. Talk about a lucky call for Atletico. We remain at 2-0.

KEY STATS

With Barcelona's elimination tonight, no team has ever retained the Champions League since its inception in 1992/93.
Only Diego Costa in 2013/14 (8 goals) has scored more for Atletico Madrid in a Champions League season than Antoine Griezmann has for them this campaign (6).
It was Griezmann’s third Champions League brace this season, after scoring two in both matches against Galatasaray.
This loss ended a run of seven consecutive wins over Atleti for Barcelona in all competitions.
