The 31-year-old Argentinian scored 86 goals for United across a four-year spell after arriving as a virtual unknown in the summer of 2008.
He left for Norwich in January 2013 but has seen his career stall since then, making just a handful of senior appearances in the last 33 months.
Becchio had a loan spell with Rotherham - then managed by new Leeds boss Steve Evans - and has also played for home-town club Belgrano, but is back looking for a new club.
Press Association Sport understands Becchio is keen to make a return to Leeds at the turn of the year and that his representatives are hopeful of arranging a meeting with United to discuss a possible move.
Evans, however, said earlier this week he would be interested in meeting Becchio for "coffee, but only for coffee".
