Huddersfield won by a single Rajiv van La Parra goal in the sixth minute of the game; Villa scored even earlier with a fine strike from Jack Grealish, but they threw away the advantage in the second half.
Tammy Abraham got the first goal back in the 59th minute, Joe Bryan added a second two minutes later, and Lee Tomlin wrapped things up nine minutes from time.
Jamal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey scored the goals to secure Newcastle a 2-0 win over Brighton, down to ten men after the dismissal of Sam Baldock.
Barnsley dismantled Rotherham by four goals to nil, from Marc Roberts, Adam Hammll, Tom Bradshaw and Ryan Kent.
Fulham moved up to second after beating Blackburn Rovers in injury time thanks to Tom Cairney; QPR continue to ride high after a 1-0 win over Wigan courtesy of Nedum Onuoha.
It was another single goal win for Ipswich with Grant Ward's volley the only goal of the game against Preston; and Reading left it until one minute from time before Yann Kermorgant secured their late win at Cardiff City.
Birmingham beat Norwich 3-0 with goals from David Davis and a brace from Clayton Donaldson.
Nottingham Forest kept the goals flowing, with strikes from Pajtim Kasami, Damien Perquis and Oliver Burke, and Kalvin Phillips's consolation was never going to be enough for Leeds to get back in it.
Sheffield Wednesday and Brentford played out a 1-1 draw with both sides finishing the game with ten men.
