Real Madrid were dumped out of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals following a 2-2 draw with an inspired Celta Vigo side at the Balaidos.
The hosts took a 2-1 first leg lead into the match after last week’s win at the Santiago Bernabeu and saw out their lead, with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lucas Vazquez not enough for Zinedine Zidane’s side to overturn the deficit.
Danilo’s first-half own goal made a tough task even tougher for the visitors, and Real Madrid never really recovered from that moment. They rallied late on, with Vazquez’s stoppage-time goal sparking hope that the unlikeliest of comebacks could be completed, but Celta Vigo held out.

Eduardo Berizzo deserves credit for setting his side up to attack when they could have fallen into the trap of defending what they already had. In the end, that approach paid off as Celta Vigo moved into the semi-finals for the second successive season.

TALKING POINT - Has Real Madrid’s bubble burst?

It’s just two weeks since Real Madrid’s Spanish-record 40-game unbeaten run came to an end, but since then they have lost to Celta Vigo at home and dropped out of the Copa del Rey. Has the aura that had been building around Zidane’s side disappeared? This result suggests so. Real Madrid will face some questions over the next few days, that’s for sure.

MAN OF THE MATCH - John Guidetti

The Swedish striker is quite the character, with his critics frequently taking aim at his inconsistencies, but John Guidetti was at his sparkling best this evening. Between him and Iago Aspas, Celta Vigo put Real Madrid’s makeshift defensive line to the sword, giving them problems all night long. The hosts could have scored many more than just two goals, and Guidetti was at the heart of the threat they posed.
