Hundreds of supporters took refuge on the pitch as hooliganism reared its ugly head prior to Lyon’s quarter-final first leg against Besiktas in the Europa League.
Violent clashes occurred in the city prior to the match, with the bad blood spilling into Parc Olympique Lyonnais as supporters fought in the stands.
Besiktas fans, situated in the top tier of the stand, also reportedly launched fireworks and other objects down into the Lyon section below.
Kick-off was delayed by over half an hour as the pitch was cleared.
After emerging from the tunnel, players from both teams clapped the fans before the match got underway.
Lyon won the match 2-1 courtesy of two late goals.
The incidents come after UEFA beefed up security following the bomb attack on Borussia Dortmund’s team bus on Tuesday.
Defender Marc Bartra had surgery on a broken wrist after being hit by shrapnel during the explosions.
