Rooney has been suffering with a muscle injury, and hasn't played since the 0-0 draw with Hull City on February 1.
The club released pictures of him taking part in the training session ahead of the game, which takes place on Wednesday rather than the customary Thursday.

However, when they later announced the squad who would be travelling to France, Rooney was not included, presumably because it was felt he wasn't worth risking given United are already 3-0 up from the first leg.
Shaw has hardly featured for United this season having recovered to full fitness following an injury.
United manager Jose Mourinho has maintained that he will not be sold though.
The other two notable absentees are Ander Herrera, who is suspended, and Matteo Darmian.

Full Manchester United squad for the game against Saint-Etienne:

De Gea, O'Hara, Romero; Bailly, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo, Smalling, Valencia, Young; Carrick, Fellaini, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Lingard, Schweinsteiger; Ibrahimovic, Martial, Rashford.
