Marseille defender Patrice Evra has become the first man to be sent off before a Europa League match after attacking a fan in Portugal.
In scenes that invoke memories of the time Eric Cantona assaulted a fan during a Manchester United match at Selhurst Park in 1995, former United player Evra is seen aiming a high kick at one supporter among a group of travelling Marseille fans behind a goal.
It is unclear what was said to Evra before the Group I match at Vitoria Guimaraes, but the result saw him make history by being sent off before the match kicked off.
Several reports claim that Marseille fans have been unhappy with Evra's recent form and crashed through barriers to confront the left-back with Evra, 36, opting not to take refuge.
He was named among the French club's substitutes for a match Marseille are aiming to win to take a step nearer the knock-out stage of the competition.
