There have been numerous reports in the week about Arsenal's defensive injury crisis with Kieran Gibbs, Shkodran Mustafi, Gabriel Paulista and Laurent Koscielny all out, albeit the latter due to suspension.
This has led to Mertesacker being recalled, despite not having started a game since April 2016.
David Ospina starts in goal, with Petr Cech on the bench, whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain starts at left wing-back.
The Blues have no fresh injury concerns and thus manager Antonio Conte is able to name a full-strength team.
On the right he goes with Pedro over Willian whilst in the centre of midfield he picks Nemanja Matic over former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas in the only two really close decisions.
TEAMS IN FULL:
Arsenal - Ospina, Holding, Mertesacker (c), Monreal, Bellerin, Ramsey, Xhaka, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ozil, Sanchez, Welbeck
Chelsea - Courtois; Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Cahill (c); Moses, Kante, Matic, Alonso; Pedro, Diego Costa, Hazard
