The Azzurri replaced Antonio Conte with Ventura after Euro 2016 - but Capello told the media that he had been approached about the vacancy.
“I did have some contact with the Italy squad, but I said no because I don’t feel the desire to work with the Italian Nazionale.”
Yet he’s no stranger to big international jobs, having been the manager of England and Russia.
“I wish the new coach all the best and am glad he’s doing something different - it’s a Nazionale full of youngsters," said Capello.
"Against Liechtenstein on Saturday everyone thinks it’ll be simple, but at international level there are no easy games.”
Ventura called up several promising youngsters, but opted against Mario Balotelli - but Capello refused to be drawn on whether he thought that was the correct decision.
“It is an issue I fortunately don’t have to deal with, so that’s down to Ventura,” smiled Capello.
