Nelson Acosta resigned as manager of Chile on Wednesday night, and then went out with a bang as his now former side beat Paraguay 3-2.

Acosta, 62, who managed the national team in two spells, from 1996 – 2001 and again from 2005 – 2006, was put under pressure after new Chilean Soccer Federation president Harold Mayne-Nicholls refused to back him.
"I believe it's wise, constructive and timely to allow the authorities the necessary space, time and calm to decide who should take over," said Acosta.
Uruguay-born Acosta, who became a Chilean national in 1984, announced his resignation two hours before the match, which was won through goals by Waldo Ponce, Jorge Valdivia and Luis Figueroa.
