The Daily Mail says nine players have been told they can leave Old Trafford, on what the paper is describing as “clear-out Thursday”, with World Cup winner Schweinsteiger instructed to train with the youth team.
As noted by the Manchester Evening News, Germany captain Schweinsteiger was absent from first-team training at United’s training centre in Carrington.
Andreas Perreira and Adnan Januzaj were also notable absentees as Mourinho put his squad through their paces, including new arrival Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
According to the Mail, nine players were told that they were free to find a new club and were instructed to train with the Under-21s.
Schweinsteiger, who won 22 trophies during his time at Bayern Munich, is the highest profile casualty but eyebrows will also be raised at the news that Fosu-Mensah and Borthwick-Jackson have been told to leave.
The two youngsters impressed when breaking into the first team under Louis van Gaal last season.
Also leaving the club will be James Wilson, Will Keane, Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair as Mourinho purges some academy products as he aims to whittle the squad down to 24 players.
