Jurgen Klopp netted his first win as Liverpool boss as a first goal from Nathaniel Clyne accounted for Bournemouth 1-0 in the Capital One Cup Fourth Round.
Klopp made nine changes from the weekend and Liverpool survived a number of scares in the opening half, Adam Bogdan to thank for keeping Junior Stanislas at bay on three occasions.
And it was a moment of quality from the home side that was the difference on the night. Roberto Firminio played in Carlos Teixeira and his cheeky backheel was cleared off the line by Adam Smith, only for Clyne to slam home with his left boot to open his Liverpool account.
It’s the second time in as many seasons that Liverpool have beaten Bournemouth in the cup and they progress to the quarter-finals to remain on course for a record-breaking ninth League Cup win.
KEY MOMENTS
2’ – CHANCE LIVERPOOL! Bournemouth caught cold and Firminio runs a little wide before shooting just wide of Federici’s post.
5’ – CHANCE BOURNEMOUTH! And they really should score. A sloppy pass from Allen is pounced upon and the Cherries have four on two. It’s played to Stanislas but Bogdan does well to save his effort.
17’ – GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth: Texeira gets in behind the defence and his cheeky backheel is cleared off the line by Adam Smith straight into the path of Nathaniel Clyne, who slams home his first goal for the Reds.
20’ – CHANCE BOURNEMOUTH: Again Stanislas is denied as Bogdan tips his header over the bar.
39’ – STANISLAS DENIED AGAIN: He could have had a hat-trick. Bogdan again flying across to parry away his direct free kick at the near post.
57’ – CHANCE LIVERPOOL: A mistake from Pugh and Firmino has a chance on the right side inside the box. He shoots just wide of the post with the angle narrowed but really should hit the target.
